Our exciting adventure started before dark when we showed up and shoved off a little after 5 am. It was literally 10 minutes later and we were dropping line. The first fish, a Black Rockfish was caught about 1 minute later. The boat quickly limited out and then headed for the next catch, hauling in crab pots loaded with legal-sized crab. The next portion of the trip was delayed after the youngest member of our group had to return to shore. I am really glad I dosed with Dramamine the night before and the morning of, since even the experienced fishermen were feeling a bit of seasickness. Returning two of our members to shore meant the rest of us got to experience the Dory launch twice, which was one of many highlights of the trip. Lingcod was our target for the second part of the day, and once again the bite was quick once we changed our rigs and dropped line in the deeper waters. I had the distinction, and misfortune, of hooking, but then losing, what may have been one of the biggest LingCod Mark has ever seen. While I wasn’t successful, it will sure make a great “One-that-got-Away” story and topped off a truly memorable experience!
