A beautiful day awaited us on the Pacific. Alarm set for 4am. Rain gear set out the night before was an essential element needed for our comfort on the boat. I wore a knit cap. A 50 minute early morning drive from our Depoe Bay sea side room up the winding road to Pacific City for a fishing charter on a Dory Boat awaited us. The launch was amazing as we each sat on the interior of the boat at the back end holding onto wooden dowels as we forced ourselves into the surf with precision timing to maximize the surf push and pull. Thanks to Mark and Marcus of Pacific Fishing Company for their fishing expertise and all the great fun catching ling cod, sea bass/rock fish and cabzon also known as “ the mother in law fish” which looks absolutely prehistoric. We pulled the crab pots and kept the males and tossed the female dungeonness crabs back. A perfect weather day with some sun and clouds and a perfect 54 degrees and an experience we seniors won’t soon forget putting out to sea with the rolling tide and then our return with big swells helping to push the Dory boat back up onto the beach with the early assist of the motor. Even the locals stopped and stared at the sight from the beach. We are exhilarated for the experience with a little sea spray in our hair and big, tired smiles.
