This past Saturday the annual blessing of the dory fleet occured. The rain stopped, the wind died down and the sun actually started to break through the clouds right before the blessing began. This is a tradition that is attended by current and former dorymen and women. Everyone brings their boats down to the beach in a large (almost 100 boats this year) display of unity and community. The ceremony lasted about a half hour with song, prayer and music. The dorymen are not neccesarily a religous group but and the co-chair of the Dorymens' Association said "do we pray when we go through the surf, you bet we do. Do we pray that we will have a safe landing, you bet we do. Do we pray that we catch lots of fish, you bet we do". If anyone is interested in seeing a variety of dory boats in all their colorful glory, this is the event to attend.
