This was our, or at least my, second trip to Cape Kiwanda. We’ve all seen the Dories fly up onto the sand, and when dedicated enough, seen them take off early in the morning but I’d never considered actually taking a trip onto the Ocean in one. At first I felt like I’d never been fishing in my life, it’s been so long since I last went out onto the Clearwater river in Idaho to fish for Salmon and Steelhead. But with my first drop into the water, two rockfish popped up. I hardly realized it was fish on until I was told to bring the line back up so we could move along, and there sat two fat rockfish. The day continued in nearly the same fashion, and I gradually got the feel for when one, or three, fish were on the line. I think the controlling feeling was surprise at the fact that they bit so quickly, and often times I was stunned to see multiple dangling from the various hooks. I have to admit, the closer we got to the limit the more my bicep started to cramp from holding up my rod when pulling them in. It was a good cramp though ;) Overall it was an amazing experience, and I’m reluctant to admit my brother had the largest lingcod, just beating my 25 inch on his last cast.
